Turning 50 wasn’t just a number for me — it was a pause button

Turning 50 wasn’t just a number for me — it was a pause button

A chance to look at where I’ve been, who I’ve become, and — just as importantly — who’s been walking alongside me all these years.

We spend so much of our lives moving from one task to the next, chasing deadlines, crossing goals off lists. We often think milestones are about the big celebration — the party, the cake, the trip. But what I learned is that they’re really about creating space. Space to reflect on what’s behind you, to appreciate the present, and to decide what’s next.

This birthday reminded me of something I’ve seen over and over in business: without intentionally marking the milestones, life becomes one long to-do list. We rush from project to project, deal to deal, without ever pausing to acknowledge progress.

Why is it worth making those moments big?
Because of what happens when you do.

There were so many highlights. I loved that my children got to know my close friends on a deeper level — some of whom I studied law with long ago. One friend, originally from Italy, taught us how to make pasta from scratch — a delicious and fun activity to do with all the kids. My daughter baked fresh French baguettes every morning for breakfast. Another friend, with her husband, prepared their famous Spanish tortilla — a recipe they had introduced us to years ago.

And there were surprises even for Simba, my dog. We always thought he was afraid of water — he won’t go near the pool in Florida. But in North Carolina, on a trail by the river, he jumped right in! He ran, splashed, rolled in the water, and came out a completely different dog — joyful and free.

Whether it’s 50 years of life, 10 years in a career, or closing a client’s dream home — milestones are worth celebrating. They give meaning to the work, strengthen our relationships, and remind us why we do what we do.

Celebrating isn’t about the cake or the speeches — it’s about connection. It’s about saying, “This matters. You matter. What we built together matters.”

My 50th will fade into the past like all birthdays do, but the way it felt — the joy, the connection, the gratitude — will fuel me for years to come. And that’s the gift milestones give us, if we choose to mark them.
